Southern caramel cake with homemade caramel icing from butter, sugar, and milk. This one tastes just like Grandma's! A classic favorite, Southern Caramel Cake is just a regular yellow cake frosted with a sweet caramel cake icing.
Whisk sifted flour and sugar together until blended. Bring water and butter to a boil. Pour over the flour mixture. Add baking soda, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla. Whisk until well combined. Bake at 350˚F for 20-25 minutes.
In a large pan, cook sugar, butter, half-and-half, and salt on medium heat until it's almost at a rolling boil. Then pour the sugar syrup in. Cook on medium-medium high.
Remove from heat and add to a large bowl or stand mixer. Stir in vanilla, and allow to cool for 15 minutes. Whip until the caramel becomes frosting consistency.
