Ingredients for the Best Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
- Unsalted butter
- Powdered sugar
- Cocoa
- Bittersweet chocolate
- Half-and-half (or cream or milk)
- Vanilla extract
- Salt
How to Make Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
Step 1. Melt chocolate squares in microwave for 30 seconds at 50% power, stir, then in 10 second increments at 50% power until fully melted. Set aside.
Step 2. Whisk together the powdered sugar and cocoa over a sheet of parchment paper until there are no lumps in the cocoa.
Step 3. In bowl of stand mixer fitted with the flat beater, beat the butter about 2 minutes, starting on low and raising to medium in the last minute. Toss in the pinch of salt while beating the butter.
Step 4. Add the powdered sugar mixture, some half and half, and the vanilla extract and beat on low speed until combined, then increase the speed to medium for about 2 minutes.
Tip: You will need to stop periodically and scrape down the sides.
Step 5. Add the melted chocolate and beat on low speed until combined then increase speed to medium and beat 1-2 more minutes until fluffy.
Tip: You may need to add additional tablespoons of half and half if the frosting is too thick or dry.
