Chocolate martini lovers, this is the one to make when you want a drink that doubles as dessert. It’s rich and creamy with layers of deep chocolate flavor, balanced by a hint of vanilla and just enough cream to make it silky. Each sip is smooth, rich, and decadent. It’s simple to shake up whenever you’re in the mood for something sweet and a little over the top.

Several years ago, David and I were sitting at a bar in a famous chain restaurant, and we saw the bartender making a chocolate martini. It looked so amazing that we asked for the recipe, and he shared it with us.

Over the years, we’ve ordered this dessert cocktail at many places, and when we find a version we like, we ask for the recipe. We’ve tweaked, tested, and put them all together, and this version is our favorite. It’s big and boozy and oh, so delicious. A definite treat at the end of an evening.

Testing results for chocolate martini

  1. While our favorite chocolate liqueur for this recipe is Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, that spirit is no longer in production. Our choice now is Mozart Dark Chocolate Liqueur.
  2. We have used pre-made whipped cream, and also tested with just a splash of heavy whipping cream. Either works fine.

Serving suggestions

The chocolate martini is an excellent after-dinner drink choice. You can pair it with a strong chocolate dessert, like these Cocoa Brownies or No-bake Oreo balls, or a favorite in our house is pairing it with my Classic Cheesecake.

You can also pair it with a savory option like a simple cheese and fruit board or a nice baked brie.

Ingredient notes

Here are a few things to know about the ingredients in this recipe.

Irish cream: We always use Baileys Irish Cream in this recipe and any other cocktail recipe that calls for Irish cream. It’s consistently good.

Chocolate liqueur: While our preference remains Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, that’s no longer in production, so we’ve switched to Mozart Dark Chocolate Liqueur.

Vanilla vodka: We prefer a vanilla vodka that’s infused with vanilla beans rather than one that’s had vanilla syrup added. We don’t find it necessary to use a super-expensive vodka in this recipe, but we don’t grab the cheapest either. Grey Goose is a good option, as is Van Gogh.

Creme de Cacao: Our preferred brand here is Tempus Fugit.
