How to make grilled chicken with avocado salsa
This quick and easy meal only takes about 25 minutes to prepare and make. You’ll start by whipping up the grilled chicken marinade — just be sure you set aside a few minutes to let the chicken absorb all of those light and fresh flavors.
- Mix together the chili powder, minced garlic cloves, smoked paprika, lime juice, honey, olive oil, and onion powder in a medium bowl large enough for the chicken breasts.
- Place chicken into the bowl and coat with your grilled chicken marinade. Cover with plastic wrap and let it sit for 15-30 minutes in the refrigerator. You may want to pound your chicken breasts to get them smaller or even.
- Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Grill chicken on the hot grill for about 5 minutes on each side. For best results, use a meat thermometer and cook until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F. (If the breasts are thicker then they will take longer.)
- Dice the ripe avocados, tomato, red onion, and cilantro and mix together in a small bowl with a bit of fresh lime juice and give it a good stir.
- Serve your grilled chicken with avocado salsa and a few lime wedges. Enjoy for dinner tonight!
Storage tips
If you have any leftovers, you can store them in the fridge where they will keep for up to 3 days. Make sure to store the leftover grilled chicken breast and the avocado salsa separately in two different airtight containers.
Variations
- To add a bit more freshness and vibrant flavor, you can substitute the onion powder for diced onions.
- Substitute agave nectar as a sweetener if you’re not a big fan of honey.
- You can also substitute the smoked paprika with standard paprika.
- For a fun twist, swap the lime juice for lemon juice.

Should I eat this dish hot or cold?
It’s all about personal preference. I like this recipe served hot off the grill, and it’s always a huge hit, but you can also enjoy your leftovers cold.
Can I make grilled chicken breast in the oven instead?
If you don’t have access to an outdoor grill, baking is an excellent option. Follow the recipe instructions for preparing the marinade and salsa. Bake the chicken in the oven at 375 degrees F for 30 minutes, or until the internal temperature is 165 degrees F. Then, serve with the avocado salsa on top!
How long can you marinate chicken before grilling?
15-30 minutes is the perfect quick marinade and is just enough to infuse some flavor into the meat. But if you are looking for a robust flavor, then a few hours is even better!
Don’t marinate chicken longer than 24 hours as it will affect the texture and turn rubbery.
