Southern apple recipes are one of my favorite parts of fall cooking. This collection runs from my Granny’s fried apple pies to slow-cooker apple butter, a cinnamon streusel bread, a tarte tatin with pears alongside the apples, and an apple crisp with a brown sugar topping and no oats. Not all of it is dessert. There are pork chops, a sausage and mushroom stuffing, a pomegranate salad, and a creamy coleslaw with cranberries.

Apple season runs late August into October in the South, and Galas and Honeycrisps keep their shape best in most of these. The apple butter and the caramel apple cake both scale for a crowd, and the streusel bread and the coleslaw taste better made a day ahead. The fried pies are the ones people ask me about all fall and one of the most popular recipes on the site.

Thank you so much for this recipe. I watched my Mom make this so many times. I’m 77 years of age and have made these pies a lot too. My Son asked me today to make them and I thought I would see how other people do them. Yours is almost exactly the way my Mom taught me. I would give you a hug if I could, but, since I can’t I will ask God to Bless you and your family.
